GOLD AS A SHIELD.

I am just starting my journey into capital preservation, and wow, everyone says gold is the ultimate safe haven! But is it really that simple? I've been digging into the differences between holding actual metal and buying paper stocks.

Wait, it's not just shiny bars?

When I first thought about gold, I imagined a wooden chest under my bed. Ouch! It turns out that is actually a terrible idea for security. I started reading about Inflation impact 2024 and realized that if I want to protect my hard-earned cash, I need to decide: do I want to touch the gold, or just see it on my screen?

It's a bit overwhelming! You have to think about purity, weight, and where on earth you’re going to put it. Or you can just buy an ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) like a regular stock. I’m trying to figure out which one won’t make me lose sleep at night.

Physical Bullion

This is the real deal—coins and bars you can actually hold. It feels so secure knowing it's right there! But then I realized you have to pay premiums over the spot price, and selling it back isn't always instant.

Gold ETFs

These are basically tracking the price of gold without you needing a vault. You can buy and sell them in seconds on your phone! Ogo! But you don't actually own the metal, just a piece of paper that says you do.

The Hidden Cost of "Safe"

I never knew that keeping gold could be so expensive! If you buy physical gold, you need a safe at home (which costs money) or a bank locker (which has monthly fees). Imagine that!

Insurance is another thing I totally forgot about. If your gold is stolen and not insured, it's just... gone. ETFs have "management fees," but they are usually way lower than renting a private vault in downtown Vancouver!

The Tax Trap?

I'm still learning about the tax rules here in BC, but it seems like gold isn't just "cash." Depending on how you buy it, you might be looking at Capital Gains Tax. ETFs are definitely taxed like stocks, but physical gold can be tricky depending on the purity. I really didn't know that!
